What difference will my life make?
Do you ever wonder about the difference your life will make?
My recent study of the OT book of Ezra refreshed my memory and inspired me to know and use the same stepping-stones for eternal influence. If all of us would follow these steps, we would make a difference for the kingdom of God!
“For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the Law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach statutes and ordinances in Israel.” Ezra 7:10
Ezra was a priest, a scribe in the Law of the God of heaven. The name Ezra means help. Tradition says Ezra memorized the law of God and was able to recall it. God placed his hand of favor on Ezra’s life. King Darius allowed Ezra to lead exiles from Babylon back to Jerusalem after 70 years in captivity.
Ezra’s ability to “help” or influence history is worth a closer look.
For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the Lord.
Ezra had a teachable heart. He knew God’s Word for himself. He not only committed it to memory, but it was embedded in his heart. It is no wonder Ezra could help people in need. You have heard it said, “You can’t lead people any further than where you are.” Ezra knew the source of his strength and used God’s wisdom to guide and help people.
How well do you know God’s Word? Is the Word of God your source of help and strength?
In the age of apps and GOD channels, it is easy to substitute “messages” about the Word for the Word. Holy Spirit gives revelation knowledge and understanding to those who earnestly seek Him. Remember, the availability of powerful preaching and teaching does not replace personal responsibility to know the truth.
How will you know if the teaching or preaching you listen to aligns with God’s Word? Open your Bible today. Ask God to show you wonderful things from His law. Select a few verses & ask yourself these questions as you read:
What are the facts?
What is the principle, instruction, or warning?
How does this apply to my life?
What is God asking me to do as a result of this Word?
To do it.
Ezra 7:10 continues, “and to do it…” Ezra not only knew the Word of God but he also applied it. In other words, he took the Word of God as the authority in his life and his actions and attitudes demonstrated sincere conviction. He lived life in agreement with God’s Word. Ezra walked his talk.
Are my words and actions in agreement with God’s Word or do they contradict each other? Mismatched lip service and lifestyle are a problem with God and man.
To teach statutes and ordinances in Israel.
The verse ends, “…and to teach statutes and ordinances in Israel.” Captivity in a foreign land left God’s people without the training and teaching of God’s law. Ezra was prepared to step out and point God’s people back to God’s truth. He offered them help and hope.
You and I live in a land of captivity to sin and sorrow. Jesus told us the devil is the “ruler of this world.” (John 12:31) Believers have the life-giving, hope-filled, Word of God. Truth releases captives. We have help for the lost and clarity for the confused. Use it wisely and use it well.
Will you learn it, pray it, live it, and teach it to those He places in your sphere of influence?
We are called to live a life that makes a difference and influences people for eternity. It’s not complicated but we must be committed.
Pray with me.
Lord, help me prepare my heart to seek You in your Word, to live it, and then to share it! Thank you for “opening my eyes to see wondrous things from Your law.” (Ps. 119:18) In Jesus Name, Amen.
