How to live with confidence

I think many of us would like to go through life with more confidence. We turn to self-help books, podcasts, or our own instincts to find help growing our confidence. While some of these can be good and helpful things, they don’t provide the ultimate answer. Scripture does. Let’s take a look at Psalm 27.

“The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked advance against me to devour me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident.” Psalm 27:1-3 (NIV)

I want to look at the three elements of this passage: the Lord is light, He is salvation, and He is strength.

The Lord is my Light.

Darkness doesn’t frighten me. This one feels pretty straight forward. If we have an ever-present light with us always, the darkness loses its power. It can’t hurt us. It can’t scare us.

The Lord is my salvation.

I can’t be touched. I’m saved and secure, and absolutely nothing can change that. It’s accomplished.

The Lord is the strength of my life.

He is my stronghold. My weaknesses do not dilute His strength in me. I don’t need to rely on my own strength because His is perfect. His strength supplies my heart with courage, and I’m confident.

If you are struggling with confidence in your life, I encourage you to meditate on this scripture. Write it down. Read it before you go to bed at night and when you wake up in the morning. Recite it to yourself in the car, and talk about it with God. Do this until it becomes a reality in your heart and mind. Find your confidence in your perfect Savior.
